Tall ornate black iron double gates between stone columns at an estate entrance with a curved driveway

From concept to a finished estate entrance

A formal entrance involves several people. A clear sequence keeps the project on track.

  1. Step 1

    Settle the design intent

Style, height, privacy and how the gate should relate to the home and the columns.

  2. Step 2

Coordinate with whoever builds the columns

Hinge anchors, conduit and footings must be set before masonry is finished.

  3. Step 3

    Plan operation and access

Operators, keypads, intercoms and backup so the gate works as you expect.

  4. Step 4

    Fabricate, finish and hang

The gate is fabricated and finished, then installed and adjusted.

Weight, detail and long-term operation

A tall gate with decorative detail is heavy, and a heavy gate on a long drive may cycle many times each day. Strong posts, quality hinges and a properly sized operator are what keep it working after the appearance has stopped drawing comment.

We would rather talk through weight and structure early than see a beautiful gate sag. It is also worth mentioning at the start if you may add an operator later, so the design leaves room for it.

Detail levels to consider

Restrained
Clean vertical pickets with a refined top profile and a simple finial. Lighter, easier to maintain and timeless.
Traditional
Scrolls, collars and a centered medallion. Rich in character; needs strong structure.
Custom statement
A monogram, a motif that references the property or a unique arch shape. Requires the most design time.
