Not everything that is broken needs replacing. Metal is repairable by nature. A cracked weld can be ground out and redone. A bent section can be cut and replaced. A worn mounting point can be built up or replaced with a stronger one. The goal is not just to make it look fixed, but to make the repair stronger than the original failure point.

We handle repairs on gates, fences, furniture, equipment, trailers, frames, brackets and a wide range of other metal items. Many smaller items can be brought to the workshop. For things that cannot be moved, see mobile welding.

The key question in any repair is why the item failed. If a bracket broke from overload, welding it back the same way will fail again. We look at the cause and reinforce where needed.

Why customers call

Common repair needs

Cracked welds and joints
Fatigue, overload and rust open weld seams. They can be ground out and re-welded.
Bent or broken members
Impact and overload bend and snap metal. Sections can be straightened or replaced.
Worn mounting points
Holes elongate and tabs wear through. They can be built up or replaced with stronger pieces.
Rust-through
Where corrosion has eaten through, sound metal is patched in and the area is protected.

Design, materials and finish

Repair approaches

  • Re-welding

Cracks are prepared and re-welded, often with reinforcement plates or gussets.

  • Straightening and reshaping

Bent members are straightened where the metal allows without weakening it.

  • Patching and replacement

Damaged sections are cut out and replaced with new material of matching or greater strength.

  • Reinforcement

Added gussets, sleeves or thicker material where the original design was too light.

Is it worth repairing?

Repair makes sense when the original item is good and the failure is localized. It makes less sense when the metal is thin and corroded throughout or the item is cheap to replace. We will give an honest view over the phone, with photos, before you commit to anything.

How the work goes

A realistic project process

Project process

  1. Step 1

    Describe the item and failure

Call and explain what is broken and how. Photos help us judge the repair.

  2. Step 2

Assess and agree on the approach

We discuss whether to repair or replace, where the work will be done and scheduling.

  3. Step 3

    Repair

Failed areas are prepared, welded or replaced, and reinforced where appropriate.

  4. Step 4

    Clean up and protect

Welds are ground smooth and primed or painted for protection.

Scope and pricing

What affects the scope and cost

Every project is different, so pricing depends on the details. These are the factors that shape the work.

  • Extent and number of repairs
  • Type of metal
  • Need for replacement material or reinforcement
  • Workshop or on-site work
  • Finishing required afterward

Questions

Welding & Metal Repair: common questions

Welding & Metal Repair: common questions
What kinds of items can you repair?

Many steel items can be repaired, including gates, fences, furniture, frames, brackets and equipment. Send photos or describe the item when you call.

Can you weld cast iron?

Cast iron can be difficult to weld and does not always accept repair. We can look at photos and tell you what is realistic.

Will a welded repair be as strong as the original?

A properly done repair, with reinforcement where needed, can be as strong or stronger than the original joint. We look at why the item failed first.

Do I need to bring the item to you?

Smaller items can come to the workshop. Items that cannot be moved can be repaired on site. See mobile welding.
