Black double-leaf entry gate with hand-forged scrollwork and a center medallion on stone columns

A custom gate begins with the opening and the property around it: the width between pillars or posts, the slope of the ground, the style of the house, and how the gate needs to move. From there we work through the design with you, whether that is a traditional ornamental pattern with scrolls and finials, a restrained vertical-picket design, or a contemporary panel with slats or laser-cut detail.

Because every gate is fabricated for one location, the details can follow your property rather than a catalog. Arched tops that echo a window, a monogram or medallion at the center, matching pedestrian gates, and posts that tie into existing walls are all part of the conversation.

You will often hear these called wrought iron gates. Most gates sold under that name today are fabricated from steel, which is strong, weldable and holds up well with a proper finish. We will tell you plainly what material we recommend for your project and why.

Where it applies

Custom Iron Gates for homes and businesses

Residential and commercial applications

Residential

  • Entry gates at the front of a driveway or a long private drive
  • Matching gate sets that coordinate with an iron fence or railing
  • Courtyard and side-yard gates with a decorative design
  • Pool and backyard gates where style matters as much as security

Commercial

  • Branded or architectural entrances for offices and medical buildings
  • Gated parking areas and service courts that need a polished look
  • Hospitality and multifamily entries where curb appeal counts
  • Design-forward gates that match an existing steel or glass facade

Why customers call

Why customers ask for a custom gate

The opening is not standard
Uneven pillars, a sloped drive or an unusual width often rule out off-the-shelf gates. Fabricating to measured dimensions avoids awkward gaps and forced fits.
The house deserves a matching entrance
A gate that echoes the roof line, window shapes or stonework makes the whole property feel intentional rather than added on.
Replacing a worn or mismatched gate
Older gates may be sagging, rusting through at the bottom rails or no longer match the fence. A new gate can be designed to correct those problems.
Security and privacy goals
Picket spacing, height, solid panels and latch placement all change how a gate performs. These choices can be set at the design stage.

Design, materials and finish

Design, material and finish considerations

  • Style

Traditional scrollwork, flat-top pickets, spear tops, arches, horizontal slat, laser-cut panels, or a mix of solid and open sections.

  • Material

Steel is the most common choice. Aluminum may suit lighter, corrosion-resistant applications, and some details can combine materials.

  • Finish

Paint or powder coat in black, bronze, charcoal or custom colors. Finish choice affects durability, maintenance and how the gate ages in Texas sun.

  • Hardware and operation

Hinge type, latch, drop rods, and whether the gate swings or slides all influence structure. If you plan to automate later, mention it early so the frame can accommodate an operator.

Gate design versus gate function

Ornamental detail looks beautiful, but weight is the hidden cost of a heavy design. A wide gate with dense scrollwork needs stronger posts and hinges than a simple picket gate of the same size. We would rather talk through this early than have a lovely gate that sags in a year.

If you are choosing between a custom design and a simpler driveway gate, our driveway gates page covers the practical side of sizing and layout, and our ornamental ironwork page goes deeper into decorative detail.

How the work goes

A realistic project process

Project process

  1. Step 1

Discuss the vision and the opening

Call to describe the property, approximate width and height, the style you have in mind and whether the gate will be manual or automated.

  2. Step 2

    Confirm measurements and design direction

Dimensions, post conditions and design details are confirmed so the gate can be fabricated to the actual opening.

  3. Step 3

    Fabrication in the workshop

The frame, pickets and decorative elements are cut, welded and ground smooth, then prepared for finishing.

  4. Step 4

    Finish and installation

The gate is finished, delivered and hung, with hinges and latch adjusted so it swings true.

Scope and pricing

What affects the scope and cost

Every project is different, so pricing depends on the details. These are the factors that shape the work.

  • Overall width, height and number of leaves
  • Complexity of ornamental or laser-cut detail
  • Material choice and thickness of the frame
  • Finish type and number of coats
  • Condition of existing posts or pillars and any needed modifications
  • Hardware, and whether an operator will be added

Questions

Custom Iron Gates: common questions

Custom Iron Gates: common questions
Is a custom gate really made of wrought iron?

Traditional wrought iron is rarely used today. Most gates called wrought iron are fabricated from mild steel, which is strong and easy to weld. We describe materials accurately and will confirm what your gate will be made of.

Can you match my existing fence?

Often yes. A photograph and a few measurements of your fence help us suggest picket style, height and finish so the gate looks like part of the same system.

Can a custom gate be automated later?

It can, provided the frame, posts and hinges are planned for the extra weight and operator. Tell us about your plans during the first call so the design can allow for it.

How long does a custom gate take?

Timing depends on design complexity, finish and current scheduling. Call to describe the project and we will discuss realistic scheduling for the work.

Do you build both the gate and the posts?

Where the project calls for it we can fabricate and install steel posts, and we can also hang gates on existing pillars after checking that they are suitable.
