Custom welded steel frame, brackets and plates on a fabrication table with measuring tools

Custom fabrication means building something that does not exist yet, or something that no one sells in the size you need. A table base for a slab of wood. A bracket to hold equipment at an odd angle. A frame to carry a sign. A support for a sunken tub.

We can work from engineering drawings, from a rough sketch on a napkin, or from a sample piece to copy. If you have an idea but not a design, we can help develop one, thinking through strength, weight, finish and how the piece will be installed or used.

This page covers custom pieces built in the workshop. For gates, fences and railings, see the relevant product pages. For large structural framing, see structural steel fabrication.

Design, materials and finish

Materials and construction options

  • Steel

Mild steel in tube, flat bar, angle and plate is the workhorse for most custom work.

  • Other metals

Aluminum and stainless can be fabricated for lighter, corrosion-resistant or food-contact needs. See aluminum and stainless steel fabrication.

  • Joining

Welded construction for strength, with bolt-together designs where parts need to disassemble.

  • Finishing

Raw steel with clear coat, painted, or powder coated depending on appearance and exposure.

Bringing a sketch to the first call

A phone call is more productive with a few things in hand. A sketch with dimensions, a photo of where the piece will go, a sample or an example of something similar all help. Tell us what the piece must carry or do, and anything it has to fit around. We can refine the design from there.

How the work goes

A realistic project process

Project process

  1. Step 1

Describe the piece and its purpose

Call to explain what you need, where it goes, what it carries and any sketches or samples you have.

  2. Step 2

Agree on design, material and finish

We work through dimensions, material, joining and finish, and discuss scope and scheduling.

  3. Step 3

    Fabricate

The piece is cut, fit, welded and ground in the workshop.

  4. Step 4

    Finish and deliver or install

The piece is finished and then delivered or installed as agreed.

Scope and pricing

What affects the scope and cost

Every project is different, so pricing depends on the details. These are the factors that shape the work.

  • Size and weight of the piece
  • Complexity of design
  • Material and thickness
  • Finish
  • Quantity, since repeat pieces can be more efficient
  • Delivery and installation needs
