Black steel spiral staircase with wood treads in a bright modern home

A staircase is structural, functional and highly visible at the same time. Metal stairs can solve problems that wood cannot, such as tight footprints, outdoor exposure and long spans, and can also become the most memorable feature in a space.

We fabricate straight stairs, stairs with landings, spiral staircases and exterior steps in steel, with treads in steel plate, grating, wood or other surfaces depending on location. Railings and handrails are fabricated to match.

This is a project where planning counts. Rise, run, headroom, attachment points and loading all need to be reviewed together. If you only need a railing on an existing stair, see railings and handrails.

Stairs are structural and life-safety elements. Project requirements, design coordination, safety considerations, loading and applicable approvals are reviewed for the specific job. We do not claim engineering credentials, and some projects may require separate design review.

Why customers call

Why customers choose metal stairs

Tight footprints
Spiral designs reach another level in a small footprint where a straight stair will not fit.
Outdoor durability
Steel stairs with proper finishing handle weather better than many alternatives.
Replacing worn or unsafe steps
Rotted wood or corroded steel stairs can be replaced with a new structure.
A design feature
Open risers, floating treads and slim stringers can define a space.

Design, materials and finish

Types, materials and finishes

  • Configuration

Straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, spiral or curved stairs, with or without intermediate landings.

  • Treads

Steel plate, perforated or bar grating for exterior use, or wood and other surfaces interior.

  • Stringers and structure

Single center stringers, double stringers or fabricated frames, sized to span and load.

  • Finish

Powder coat or paint for exterior, or clear coat and darkened finishes for interior steel.

Spiral versus straight stairs

Spiral stairs save floor area but are steeper and can be harder for carrying furniture or for frequent daily use by many people. Straight stairs with landings are easier to climb but need more room. If the stair is a primary route between floors, tell us. If it is occasional access to a loft or roof deck, a spiral is often a perfect fit. We will help you weigh these.

How the work goes

A realistic project process

Project process

  1. Step 1

    Discuss the space and purpose

Call to describe floor-to-floor height, available footprint, indoor or outdoor and who will use the stair.

  2. Step 2

Stringers, treads and railings are fabricated, welded and finished, often in sections for transport.

  4. Step 4

    Install and secure

The stair is set, anchored and aligned, and railings are completed.

Questions

Metal Stairs & Spiral Staircases: common questions

Metal Stairs & Spiral Staircases: common questions
How much space does a spiral staircase need?

Spirals come in a range of diameters. The right size depends on floor height and usage. Share your space dimensions when you call.

Can metal stairs be built for outdoors?

Yes. Exterior stairs use materials and finishes chosen for weather exposure and traction.

Do you handle permits and engineering?

Requirements vary by project and jurisdiction. We review them for each job, and some projects may require separate design review. We do not claim engineering credentials.

Can you replace a rotting wooden exterior stair with metal?

Yes, that is a common project. We review the connection points and what the new stair will bear on.
