Window Guards and Security Metalwork

Window guards and security metalwork add a physical barrier without turning a building into a fortress. We fabricate them in designs that match the architecture and keep light and ventilation.

Black steel window guards with a lattice and scroll pattern over arched windows on a stucco facade

Security metalwork has an image problem, because poorly designed bars make a building look like a fortress. Well-designed window guards can instead look like decorative ironwork while still providing a real barrier. The difference comes from proportion, pattern and finish.

We fabricate window guards, security grilles and protective screens for homes and businesses. Designs range from simple vertical bars to ornamental scroll and lattice patterns. Guards can be fixed or hinged so windows remain usable and, where required, accessible in an emergency.

Safety and egress matter. In bedrooms and other spaces where a window may serve as an escape route, guards should allow an opening from the inside. We discuss egress and applicable requirements for each project.

Window guards can affect emergency escape. Project requirements, safety considerations, egress, design coordination and applicable approvals are reviewed for the specific job.

Why customers call

Why customers add window guards

Deterring break-ins
A physical barrier at ground-level windows makes forced entry more difficult.
Securing a vulnerable opening
Rear windows, basement windows and sliding doors are often the weakest points.
Business property protection
Storefronts and back-of-house openings benefit from protective metalwork.
Keeping windows open for air
Guards allow ventilation that a locked window alone does not.

Design, materials and finish

Design and mounting considerations

  • Pattern

Plain bars for a simple look, or lattice, scroll and curved patterns that read as decoration.

  • Fixed or hinged

Fixed guards give maximum security; hinged or releasable guards allow interior access for cleaning and escape.

  • Mounting

Mounted inside or outside the opening, into masonry, wood or metal framing, using suitable fasteners.

  • Finish

Painted or powder-coated, usually to match window frames, doors or trim.

Egress and fire safety come first

Bars that cannot be opened from the inside can trap occupants in an emergency. For bedrooms and other living spaces, quick-release or hinged guards are a common solution. We talk through which windows need an interior release and how requirements affect the design, rather than assume a single approach fits every window.

How the work goes

A realistic project process

Project process

  1. Step 1

    Discuss the openings

Call to describe which windows or doors need protection, the building type and your security goals.

  2. Step 2

    Plan design, egress and mounting

We review pattern, fixed or hinged operation and how the guards will be attached.

  3. Step 3

    Fabricate to measured openings

Each guard is fabricated to the measured opening and finished.

  4. Step 4

    Install and test

Guards are mounted securely and any release mechanisms are tested.

Scope and pricing

What affects the scope and cost

Every project is different, so pricing depends on the details. These are the factors that shape the work.

  • Number and size of openings
  • Pattern and decorative complexity
  • Fixed versus hinged or releasable design
  • Wall material and mounting method
  • Finish
