Ornamental black iron balcony railing with hand-formed scrolls and twisted pickets on a stucco wall

Ornamental ironwork is where metal fabrication becomes visible craft. Hot or cold-formed scrolls, collars, twisted bars, cast or forged accents and carefully proportioned patterns give a gate, railing or panel its character.

We work with the traditions of wrought iron design: scroll shapes, repeated motifs, collars and baskets, while using materials practical for today, mostly steel. We can build new decorative pieces, reproduce damaged or missing elements, and combine ornament with plain structural members.

This page is about decorative design and detail. For gates, railings and fences as products, see the relevant pages; ornamental work can be applied to all of them.

Why customers call

When customers ask for ornamental work

To make an entrance memorable
Decorative gates and railings make a strong first impression.
To match a historic or traditional style
Older homes and period buildings often need metalwork consistent with their era.
To reproduce a damaged element
A missing scroll or broken finial can be recreated from the existing pattern.
To personalize a property
Monograms, motifs and custom patterns can reflect the people who live or work there.

Design, materials and finish

Detail, form and finish

  • Scrollwork and forms

C-scrolls, S-scrolls, spirals and flowing patterns, formed to template and welded in place.

  • Accents and hardware

Collars, baskets, rosettes, finials and caps, fabricated or sourced to suit the design.

  • Texture and character

Hammered, twisted and forged-looking surfaces for hand-made character.

  • Finish

Black, bronze, and aged or highlighted finishes that bring out detail.

Restraint is part of the craft

Good ornamental work knows when to stop. A few well-placed scrolls often look better than a gate crowded with pattern. We will help you balance richness with proportion, and with the weight and cost that detail adds.

If you have a photograph of an existing piece you want to match or an image of a style you love, bring it to the first call. It is the quickest route to a shared understanding.

Questions

Ornamental Ironwork: common questions

Ornamental Ironwork: common questions
Do you offer true wrought iron?

Traditional wrought iron is rarely available today. Most ornamental work is fabricated from mild steel, which can be formed and finished to achieve the traditional look. We describe materials honestly.

Can you copy an existing ornamental piece?

Often yes. Photographs and measurements of the original let us reproduce missing or damaged elements.

Can ornamental work be added to an existing gate or railing?

Sometimes. The existing structure must carry the added weight. We review it with you.

Do you make decorative pieces for interiors?

Yes. Interior accent railings, dividers and wall pieces are part of the work we discuss.
