Restoration & finishing

Metal Painting and Powder Coating

A good finish is the difference between metalwork that looks sharp for years and metalwork that fades and rusts. We help you choose and apply the right coating for the piece and where it lives.

Finishing is half the life of exterior metalwork. Even the best fabrication will rust if the coating is thin, skipped at edges or applied over poor preparation. Choosing a finish is a trade-off among durability, appearance, cost and what can physically be coated.

Powder coating bakes a dry powder into a hard, even shell and is excellent for components that can be removed and taken to the finishing setup. Liquid paint systems are suited to large installed structures and field touch-up. Each has its place.

We finish new fabrication as part of our work and refinish existing metal. For heavily rusted items that need repair first, see rust repair and metal restoration.

Why customers call

Why customers ask about finishing

Faded or chalking paint
Sun breaks down coatings. A fresh finish restores appearance and protection.
New metalwork needs protection
Raw steel must be finished promptly to avoid rust.
A color change
Updating finish color refreshes a property without replacing metalwork.
Longer-lasting results
The right system and preparation extend the time between refinishing.

Design, materials and finish

Finish systems to consider

  • Powder coating

A baked-on dry powder finish known for hardness and even coverage. Best for pieces that can be removed and transported. Size is limited by oven and setup.

  • Liquid paint systems

Primer and topcoat applied by spray or brush. Suited to large or installed pieces and field work.

  • Color and sheen

Black in satin or gloss is most common. Bronze, charcoal and custom colors are available. Sheen changes how weld marks and surface texture show.

  • Preparation level

Preparation, whether brushing, grinding or blasting, largely determines how long the finish lasts.

Powder coat or paint? A simple guide

If an item can be unbolted and transported, such as gate panels, railing sections or furniture, powder coating is often worth considering for durability. If it is large, welded in place or cannot be moved, a quality paint system applied on site is the practical answer. For some projects, both are combined, with powder-coated panels and field-painted posts. Describe the piece and we can recommend an approach.

Questions

Painting & Powder Coating: common questions

Painting & Powder Coating: common questions
Is powder coating better than paint?

Powder coating is very durable on pieces that can be removed and transported. Liquid paint is practical for large or installed items. The best choice depends on the piece.

Can you powder coat a fence that is already installed?

Powder coating usually requires removing components. Installed fences are often finished with a quality paint system on site.

What colors are available?

Black is most common, with bronze, charcoal and custom colors possible. Discuss your preference when you call.

How should I prepare the item?

Leave preparation to us. Surface preparation is the most important step and is part of the finishing work.
